With this Petrel subsurface software 2024.8 release, SLB continues its commitment to improve and innovate the way you work. Petrel allows multi-domain experts to co-create a shared earth model that can be continuously updated as new information is acquired. These release notes contain short descriptors for the most significant enhancements, fixed issues, and known limitations, as well as system requirements and recommendations. Finding, characterizing, and exploiting new and existing reservoirs is increasingly complex. To overcome these challenges, we must continually improve and innovate the way we work. New features and enhancements in Petrel 2024.8:

Geophysics

•         Interpretation window: You can now choose Ratio or Absolute Z scale for seismic similar to the XY scale.

•         ZGY Tool: OpenVDS to OpenZGY conversion is now unit aware. You can choose to convert to and from meter to feet for the XY scale.

•         Composite Line Management: You can now choose how to manage the composite line folder. There is an option to have the maximum number of lines stored in one folder. Also, you can move the lines from one folder to another.

•         Manual Seismic Horizon Interpretation: There is now an option to stop at visible faults during manual interpretation.

•         QI ML Reservoir Characterization – Wavelet toolbox: A wavelet toolbox tab has been added, which enables you to control and view the rotation applied to the input wavelet.

•         QI ML Reservoir Characterization - Background model: A user-defined background model can now be added to the results to generate an absolute attribute. The background model should be of the same template as the target attribute.

•         Seismic data conditioning: Calculation performance improvements for pre-stack seismic data and for several post-stack seismic operations, such as gather flattening, phase balancing, time shift estimation, zero phase, amplitude balancing, average stack, band pass filter, and bulk time shift.

•         2D Forward Modeling: The performance of the 2DFM calculations has been improved.

Geological interpretation

Well section window

Display index tracks of different units: In the Well section window, you can now add multiple index tracks with different units (for example, one for metric and one for feet). In the Well section template settings, add an index track, then in the Style tab's settings, select Metric, Feet (international), or choose a custom unit in the list. Click Apply or OK to add the new tracks to the Well section window. If you need to display the unit associated with an individual track, select the Show Z unit in header check box in the template settings, and the units will display in the section.

Reservoir and production engineering

•         Enumeration support for Intersect black oil cases with EDFM model: You can now initialize black oil simulation cases for Intersect with Embedded Discrete Fracture Model (EDFM) by enumeration by adding discrete cells and fractures attributes such as pressure and saturation in the Define simulation case process. To use this feature, you must have Intersect 2025.1 or later and Intersect Connector 2025.1 or later must be active.

•         Conventional Model Builder plugin: Petrel embedded Conventional Model Builder (CMB) plug- in comes with several new features such as Intersect user edits support, enhancements to separator definition, and temperature options for compositional fluids. You must have an RE Extension Suite license to use the CMB plugin.

•         Reporting preset for Geothermal cases: The Define Simulation Case process in Petrel includes a new reporting preset for Geothermal cases. This template facilitates the quick selection

of relevant summary and 3D simulation results to be requested from the Intersect simulator applicable for geothermal and thermal cases. You must have Intersect 2025.1 or later and Intersect Connector 2025.1 or later must be active to use this feature in Intersect simulations.

•         Automatic tuning for CCS in Carbon storage model builder: You can now activate automatic tuning for carbon capture and storage (CCS) cases. This option activates a set of tuning options that improve the convergence of CCS cases. To use this feature, you must have Intersect 2024.4 or later and Intersect Connector 2024.4 or later must be active.

Geomechanics

•         Introduced a workaround during Petrel case export that ensures Intersect-Visage coupled cases run more reliably when parallelising on multiple cloud compute nodes (more than 32 processes).

•         Fixed a regression bug that affected the grid embedded in Petrel 2024.7, where the layer count was incorrect when embedding a reservoir grid with multiple underburden zones.

•         Fixed a bug introduced in Petrel 2024.7 that required a case to be re-exported after copying and pasting in the Cases pane.

Reservoir modeling

Property modeling

•         Use Vertical Proportion Curve in Kriging: Vertical Proportion Curves established in Data Analysis can be used in Kriging (Trend Modeling) and Indicator Kriging.

•         Detailed Parametric History Capture: The details about common settings and active filters applied to a property model is captured in its history.

Statistical calculations across Petrel

•         Property Calculator: Supports harmonic and geometric averaging, and percentile calculations. This also apply to the Calculator for other data types.

•         Property Calculator history: The name of the active custom grid filters is added to the Calculator's syntax history.

•         Properties: There is a new Make map operation to perform all the common statistical calculations at a (x,y) location, and a Property operation to calculate along a (IJ) grid column.

•         Multi-property calculation: Added support to calculate medians and percentiles across multiple properties.

Gridding

Local grid refinements (LGRs) for depogrids: You can now create LGRs for depogrids to increase model resolution near to wells and faults, above or below surfaces, within a region of interest defined by closed polygons, or using a discrete grid property to define the cells of interest. Each of these sources has associated options to control the LGR creation.

Foundation

•         Fixed when a Saved Search object was not removed from the Input pane after you cancelled creating a new one.

•         Fixed the incorrect readouts in the Histogram window, in which the values shown were based on the cursor position instead of the value of the histogram interval.

•         Fixed an issue that happened when you copied data from the output sheet and pasted it into Excel, because it was inserting an additional column and row to the pasted data.

•         Fixed a histogram display issue for discrete properties. If the data values had very high numbers, then the histogram distribution was incorrect.
