Intersect 2026.2

INTERSECT 2026.2 is a major semi-annual release of SLB’s next-generation high-resolution reservoir simulator, developed in collaboration with Chevron and TotalEnergies. Released alongside ECLIPSE 2026.2, this version delivers major performance leaps in GPU-accelerated computing, significant solver speedups for complex fractured reservoirs (EDFM), enhanced geothermal wellbore thermodynamics, and refined multi-physics workflows for both hydrocarbon and new energy applications.
1. High-Performance Computing & GPU Acceleration
- GPU Linear Solver Speedup:
- Substantial optimization of the GPU-based linear solver engine.
- Delivers an average speedup (up to ~50% wall-clock runtime reduction) across the standard industrial test suite in both single-GPU and multi-GPU configurations compared to earlier versions.
- MPI Architecture:
- Updated the bundled distributed-memory parallel library to Intel MPI 2021.18, aligning it with ECLIPSE 2026.2 for improved cluster scalability and communication throughput on large hybrid CPU/GPU nodes.
2. Complex Fractured Reservoirs & Multiscale Modeling
- SFI Multiscale Solver with EDFM:
- Major performance breakthrough in the Sequential Fully Implicit (SFI) multiscale transport solver when coupled with the Embedded Discrete Fracture Model (EDFM).
- In dense, complex discrete fracture network (DFN) test cases, the updated coupling achieves runtime reductions of orders of magnitude without sacrificing mass-conservation accuracy.
- Automatic Multiscale Configuration:
- Automated loading of multiscale plugins and the EGRID report directly from .ixf input files, eliminating the need to manually declare them in the .afi orchestration decks.
3. Advanced Physics & New Energy Workflows
- Deep Geothermal Wellbore Modeling:
- The thermal wellbore model now incorporates potential energy (gravitational head) terms into the energy balance equation.
- This significantly improves the accuracy of bottomhole and along-well temperature profiles in deep, high-temperature geothermal wells and pseudo-adiabatic completion regimes.
- Relative Permeability & Capillary Pressure:
- Hysteresis + Interfacial Tension (IFT): Enabled combined simulation of relative permeability hysteresis alongside IFT-dependent miscible/near-miscible displacement models (critical for WAG and miscible gas injection).
- Capillary Pressure Limits: Users can now set an explicit upper ceiling on maximum capillary pressure during Leverett -function initialization, preventing unphysical pressure spikes in ultra-low permeability or tight-rock facies.
- In-Situ Recovery (ISR):
- Added a dedicated workflow and benchmark template for in-situ uranium leaching, expanding INTERSECT’s application domain into mineral resource extraction and geochemical transport.
4. Usability & Field Management Diagnostics
- On-Demand Simulated Well Logs:
- Simulated RFT (Repeat Formation Tester) pressure surveys and PLT (Production Logging Tool) inflow profiles can now be output at arbitrary, user-defined simulation dates/times rather than being tied solely to predefined global report steps.
- Surface Network Reporting:
- Enhanced diagnostic output and stream vector reporting for integrated surface network coupled runs (such as Petrel Reservoir Engineering / IxNetwork integrations).
